Kayla Cerrone is a Dutch illustrator working from Hengelo, the Netherlands. Graduated with a bachelors degree in Illustration Design in 2022, her work combines the natural textures of real paint on paper with the intensity and vibrancy of digital work.
Her main focus is the creation of strong atmospheres and compelling narratives, resulting in immersive illustrations with a rough edge.

“For me, the joy in illustrating lies mainly in the creation of atmospheres. I love taking concepts or emotions and translating those into something visual and intuitive. It has to feel right, not just look right.”
“I make good use of my nearby forest – you can often find me there studying the different textures and shapes of the plants and trees, to use as inspiration for my illustrations later on. I also like to do my concept creation in the forest, the sound of the wind going through the trees creates a great place to focus.”

Her work mainly involves acrylic gouache, with the occasional addition of acrylic paints, inks or pastels. Through intentional planning, her works are not only layered on the paper, but also layered digitally.
“I love working with real paint. All paints and pigments behave differently, and I think those different characteristics can be what brings an illustration to life. I keep notes and make marks on my paint tubes, so I can use them intentionally and create different textures.”
“I often illustrate different layers on different pieces of paper. That way, I can combine them digitally in a way that preserves the natural textures of the paint, while also adding a vibrancy that only digital work has.”
All works are vegan, and created with a respect for the environment.
